Robert Raymer, an American expat writing on the island of Borneo, teaches creative writing at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas). Previously he taught at Universiti Sains Malaysia in Penang where he lived for 21 years.

Born in Grove City, Pennsylvania, he grew up in Greenville and Newark, Ohio, studied at Miami University, and lived in Boulder, Colorado and Madison, Wisconsin, where he was a regional manager for Kinko’s, in charge of eleven stores in three states before becoming the first person to retire (at the age of 28) to move to Malaysia.

Robert has backpacked solo to 36 countries, taught tennis, modeled, played Santa Claus, managed a stage crew for Penang Players, danced the tango in the Oscar-winning French film Indochine (1992), and was an extra in Beyond Rangoon, Paradise Road and Anna and the King.

Hundreds of his articles and short stories have appeared in dozens of publications including The Literary Review, Thema, London Magazine, My Weekly, Silver Kris, Going Places, The Writer, and Readers Digest. One story has been used for Cambridge International Examinations. He was also the editor for Silverfish New Writings 4 (2004).

Stories from Lovers and Strangers Revisited (MPH 2008), a collection of short stories set in Malaysia, a heavily revised and expanded version of Lovers and Strangers (Heinemann Asia 1993) have been taught in numerous Malaysian universities, private colleges, SPM Literature, and a high school in Canada. His latest book is Tropical Affairs: Episodes from an Expat's Life in Malaysia (MPH, 2009), a collection of humorous articles and non-fiction narratives.

He lives in Kuching, Sarawak with his wife, Jenny, their sons Jason and Justin, and has another son Zaini.
